Are you tired from work and craving a real reset? Then put Vusanje in northern Montenegro on your list. It’s a small mountain village with a quiet rhythm, big landscapes, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel welcome fast. This is a place where meals still taste homemade, where you’ll likely try traditional dishes you won’t find in coastal restaurants, and where the evenings feel slower in a good way.
Vusanje is especially popular with hikers because it sits right on the Peaks of the Balkans route. From May to October, the village becomes a meeting point for travelers from all over Europe and beyond you’ll hear different languages at breakfast and see backpacks everywhere. It still feels authentic, though. It’s not a resort town; it’s a mountain basecamp.
Practical tips before you go
In summer, accommodation can fill up quickly, so it’s smart to book ahead, especially if you’re coming in July or August. Also, plan your basics: shops and options are limited compared to bigger towns. The nearest town, Gusinje, is only a short drive away (around 5 km), but you don’t want to rely on finding transport at the last minute.
Taxis aren’t always waiting around in the village, but you can arrange a ride many drivers respond via phone or online and usually arrive within 20–30 minutes, depending on the time of day.
Places you shouldn’t miss
One of the best natural stops is Ujvara e Gerles. In the hottest part of summer, the water level can drop, but the area still keeps its magic cool air, rock walls, and that hidden-waterfall feeling that makes it worth the walk. It’s the kind of spot where you sit for a while, not just take a photo and leave.
Another unforgettable place is Oko Skakavice (The Eye of Skakavica). It really does look like an “eye” a deep, round pool with striking color. Locals say it’s about 20 meters deep, and the water is shockingly cold in summer around 4°C so cold that you’ll pull your hand back instinctively after a few seconds. It’s beautiful, but it also reminds you this is real mountain water.
